What a year! It was a challenging one, but thanks to you and our community of dedicated donors, we had many successes along the way.

Your gifts are vital to our work. Your stable, reliable funding allows us to take on large, ambitious projects that take years to complete and respond to urgent environmental threats as they arise.

Our strength, credibility, longevity, public engagement accomplishments, policy successes — our very existence — are all, in large part, because of you.

It’s my pleasure to share just a few of the many wins you made possible.

In 2018, you helped:

• Fund groundbreaking research that showed fugitive methane emissions in B.C.’s oil and gas sector are 2.5 times higher than reported. We used the results of this research to convince the B.C. government to develop and implement its methane regulations.
• Push the federal government to ban neonicotinoid pesticides (“neonics”). Neonics are a major worldwide threat to biodiversity and ecosystems, playing a role in mass bee deaths. After five years of pressure from the Foundation and aligned advocates, the government finally proposed to phase out most uses of the three main neonics.
• Enable the tools needed for more than 7,800 people to send messages to decision-makers demanding access to clean water for everyone in Canada. The federal government promised to end all long-term drinking water advisories in First Nations communities by 2021. Yet thousands of people in First Nations communities across Canada continue to live without access to clean drinking water.

These are your wins. Thank you!

This year, you’ll power work across Canada:

• Pushing for a national strategy on zero emission vehicles, providing input on the federal Clean Fuel Standard and helping ensure the responsible development of low-carbon fuels, including clean electricity.
• Protecting Salish Sea orcas by advocating for more marine reserves, as well as reduced sport and commercial fishing, shipping traffic and noise, and whale-watching and pollution.
• Mobilizing secure commitments for environmental rights across the political spectrum by inviting all MPs and candidates to sign a pledge that says, “I will support the recognition in law of the right to a healthy environment for all people in Canada.”
