“We had our first fin whale sighting in Johnstone Strait yesterday! ”
We had our first fin whale sighting in Johnstone Strait yesterday! Our province-wide surveys estimated about 500 fin whales in BC continental shelf waters, but they're mainly on the north coast and far offshore. We'd never seen one in the inshore waters off Vancouver Island before yesterday. These whales are endangered (formally listed as "Threatened") in Canada's Pacific waters, and are still recovering from overexploitation during commercial whaling. We're so excited to monitor their recovery, and we couldn't do that without your support for our field work. Thank you so much for your generosity!
