The impact of your donated points is expansive and long-term. A direct outcome of the Uganda Grandmothers Gathering – made possible using donated Aeroplan points – is the Grandmothers’ Consortium. Formed by six grassroots organizations working with grandmothers to create a platform to advocate and lobby for their human rights at local and national levels, they are currently working to understand the full impact of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions on grandmothers, so that they can advocate for additional support and services.

As a result of the Consortium’s initiatives in Uganda, grandmothers will be increasingly included in decision-making processes and their issues will be recognized in local and national policies. In addition, grandmothers are running for political positions – and winning! – at the local level, on national child protection councils, and land rights councils. This will lead to dramatic changes in the lives of grandmothers, as they will have improved access to services and rights-based policies that will improve their quality of life and the lives of their families and communities.
